All dog owners know that walking their dog is a necessity for their overall health. Walking your dog will help to relieve any stress or restlessness they have while keeping their body fit, according to The Animal Foundation. Don’t you just love that smile your dog makes when you pull out the leash? They just love the outdoors.  Sometimes what dog-owners don’t realize is that even on short walks, it is imperative to keep their furry friends hydrated so that their body can function properly. While summertime is the most well-known season to become dehydrated, both dogs and humans alike can become dehydrated during winter walks as well.

As a professional pet sitting and dog walking service, we have tips, tricks, and techniques to help prevent your dog from becoming dehydrated:

1.    Dehydration Prevention- Before and After

We can prevent dehydration before even beginning the walk.

Our professionals will make sure your dog has a drink of water before leaving the house so they start the walk at their best and most hydrated. After the walk, we always make sure they drink again so that they can replenish! It’s just like a human going to the gym, they need to make sure to drink enough before going to their workout and we always crave water after a nice sweat. Dogs are no different than we are.

2. Carry Water

Carrying a water bottle with cold water is also very beneficial. It isn’t necessary to have a bowl but there are collapsible bowls on the market for this purpose. When without a bowl, cupping of the hands works just as well when allowing the pup to drink out of them. Don’t forget to sip some yourself!

Many dog parks these days have drinking fountains just for dogs. If there are any in the area, those are the best places to take the dog for a walk. That way, if the water bottle is forgotten (accidents happen!), the pup will be able to get a quick sip before continuing onward.

4. A Frozen Treat

Even though there’s little sunlight and heat during the cold seasons, your dog can still become dehydrated due to activity such as walking. If there’s snow on the ground, feeding some to the dog will be beneficial. After all, snow is just frozen water and serves as a great frozen treat for dogs. It’s best to make sure the snow is clean and white before the dog chows down!

5. Don’t Over Do It

Over exercise can cause dangerous dehydration. Staying mindful of the dog during the walk will help decipher when it’s time to turn in. Does he/she seem to be walking slower, panting more, do they seem tired? It’s time to go home. If your dog becomes exhausted during the walk, they might already be dehydrated and will need their rest, along with lots of water when they get home!

When it comes to keeping your dog properly hydrated while you’re away from your pet, a professional dog walking service can help ensure that your best friend doesn’t have any interruptions to their routine. Recognizing and tending to the needs of dogs is key to keeping them hydrated. Remember, if it’s too hot for you outside, it’s too hot for your dog.
